As the founder of Dallas Maids, I’ve learned something the hard way: most problems inside a growing company don’t start with laziness, bad intentions, or poor work ethic. They start with misunderstanding.

As managers, it’s easy to assume that if something didn’t go right, someone didn’t care enough or didn’t try hard enough. In reality, that’s rarely the case. More often, the issue is that someone didn’t have what they needed; the right tools, the right information, or the confidence that they’d be heard if they spoke up. That’s where empathy comes in.

And to be clear: empathy is not a personality trait. It’s a management skill.

This Post is for Management, Including Myself

This isn’t about calling anyone out. It’s about calling ourselves up. As leaders, our job isn’t just to get results. Our job is to remove obstacles so our team can get results. When we miss that, frustration builds quietly, on both sides.

We’ve seen this in moments where communication broke down, supplies weren’t where they needed to be, instructions weren’t fully clear, or someone felt dismissed instead of supported. None of that comes from bad intent. It comes from pressure, speed, and assumptions.

Empathy Doesn’t Replace Accountability, It Improves It

There’s a myth that empathy makes management weaker. In reality, empathy makes management more effective. Much more! Empathy doesn’t mean lowering expectations. It means understanding what’s standing in the way of meeting them. And simple shift makes a big difference:

Instead of starting with:

“Why didn’t this get done?”

We start with:

“Did you have everything you needed to get this done?”

That one question changes the entire tone of the conversation.

Also, a quick tip for management when dealing with staff, use the word “What”, and not “Why”. Asking “What caused this not to get done?” invites an explanation and focuses on the situation. You’ve probably heard me phrase my questions like this. Asking “Why didn’t this get done?” can unintentionally suggest that the problem is the employee, not the circumstances.

Using “what” lowers defenses, keeps the conversation constructive, and helps you actually understand what went wrong so it can be fixed.

What We Expect from Managers Moving Forward

Empathy at Dallas Maids is not optional, and it’s not abstract. It shows up in daily actions. When an issue comes up, the order matters:

1. Listen first
2. Acknowledge what you heard
3. Ask what’s needed to do the job well
4. Resolve or escalate quickly

No defensiveness. No lectures before understanding.

Managers should use simple, consistent language that keeps communication open. Phrases like:

• “Thank you for telling me.”
• “That makes sense.”
• “Let’s make sure you have what you need.”
• “I’ll take care of this.”

These aren’t just polite, they’re effective.

Being Heard is Not a Courtesy, It’s a Standard

Being heard doesn’t mean agreeing with everything. It means acknowledging concerns and addressing them with respect and urgency. Action speaks volumes!

For example, if a cleaner needs something that’s pertinent to their job, getting it becomes a priority. Missing tools, supplies, or information create unnecessary stress and lead to preventable issues. When someone tells us they need something to do their job well, the response should be “I’ll get this you for now.” (This means keeping the stock room fully supplied) Removing those obstacles is part of our responsibility as leaders.

Why This Matters to Who We Are as a Company

If we say we believe in dignity, respect, and doing the right thing, then those beliefs have to show up in how we manage, especially when things are stressful or inconvenient.

Final Thought for Managers

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to have all the answers. But you do need to be present, supportive, and willing to ask better questions.

Empathy doesn’t slow us down. It reduces friction, improves performance, and builds trust which is why it’s not soft at all. It’s a skill. And it’s one we’re continously choosing to improve. With empathy, employees don’t just feel better, they perform better. And that’s good for everyone.

Morning Prep: Checking the Schedule and Cleaning Supplies

With that in mind, maids make sure their cleaning kits are fully stocked and their uniforms are spotless, because who wants a dusty duster, right?

The Call: 30 Minutes to Showtime

Maids call customer service agents once they are 30mins away from a customer’s house; this way we can make sure every client is fully prepared for the cleaning and has enough time to solve last minute things, perhaps tucking away any laundry piles! (or is it just me?).

Arriving at the Client’s Home

Upon arrival, maids park as stated in the booking and walk to the door. If it’s an apartment, they greet the guards warmly, and if the customer isn’t home, they use the given passcodes. Afterwards, our maid gets in the home with a bright smile and ready to help with a lovely attitude.

The Cleaning Routine: Hours of Focus

During the cleaning hours, our maids follow a checklist with the client tailored tasks that work best for each house needs, and guided by their knowledge and training, maids do their best to leave every space spotless.

They also take care of fulfilling clients requests, such as not cleaning certain areas or being quiet to not interfere with the activities of customers that work at home while the service is done. Finishing Up: A Job Well Done

At the end of each service, the maid does a (optional) walkthrough for the client and feels their happiness and relief as hers. Before finishing their work day at 5pm, she sends the videos and inspection forms from each one of the houses cleaned to our office agents.

Hello Dallas Maids’ Family!

I’m so glad you are here with us to celebrate our 20^th anniversary! Over twenty years ago I had a dream of building a first-in-class, five-star home cleaning service in the Dallas area. I had no idea then the journey that lay before my team and I, and how it would eventually bring us all to this moment.

Dallas Maids began in 2004 out with a tiny team with immense entrepreneurial spirit. Now twenty years later, it’s funny to think about that time when the internet was so new and in many ways, our lives seemed simpler. One thing that was not so simple was getting the word out about our fledgling business to potential customers. Those days were marked by scrambling to make sure it worked for our customers and pounding some pavement to get even more customers. My first office manager, Esther Kim, came up with the idea of passing out flyers at 4am during the week. My stomach turned with the idea, but it worked! We generated business from that nitty gritty resolve to succeed.

If you’ve been with us for over a decade, you may have noticed our office address has changed a couple times. We started with a tiny place that I’m convinced was a utility closet. Even better was that it was near Harry Hines. New to the Dallas area, I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. But we made it work. Our tiny office space had all of two tiny desks (the ones from Walmart that you assemble yourself) and a cubicle wall that we used to build a supply room for all our cleaning materials. A few years later we moved into a condo – again, we made it work! Determined and focused on our dream of being the best home cleaning service in the area, we kept going even with the odd office arrangements.

I’m confident those days taught us so many valuable lessons. Here’s a few that just come to mind readily:

• Dreams take hard work – it’s one thing to dream and even plan, but it’s another to execute. Don’t get discouraged when the payoff isn’t immediate. Roll up your sleeves even further and get to it.
• Accept your present situation but don’t let it define you. If I had known Dallas better I wouldn’t have rented our first office space near Harry Hines. But limited resources and experience landed us there. But we didn’t let that location seep into our character or way of doing business. We worked harder, believing that one day we would not only want a different office, we would need one because of our growth.
• Be flexible. I can’t remotely recall the number of times I would clean one of our customers’ homes or apartments when the need arose. As a small business, one sick callout can be really disruptive. But we kept our word and adjusted whatever we could to make sure our customers had their cleanings done on time. I’m sure we had to reschedule on occasion, but when things got tight or chaotic, we all flexed, shuffled, and worked longer together.
• Hire excellent talent. Dallas Maids wouldn’t be here if not for our stellar team. We are incredibly selective with our hiring process and it shows in the quality of our work. We don’t expect you to trust our team if we don’t trust them. Being picky in staffing our team has been at the heart of our business. Quality people do quality work.

By now, many of you have come to know and care for our team. You probably even recognize the sound of your cleaner’s car pulling up or Monse or Nelly answering the phones when you call our office, which thankfully is now much larger and in a better part of town now. Our team makes Dallas Maids successful.

From the start I knew I needed help to manage the office and take calls so I could work on growing our fledging cleaning company. Many of you may not have heard of Dallas Maids first office manager. She was an Olympic Taekwon-do athlete, Esther Kim. I’m not pulling your leg either. We hired an Olympic athlete in those first days. But her athletic zeal wasn’t contained to just Taekwon-do. Esther was a fiery competitor through and through. Those 4am flyer runs? Those were Esther’s idea. She helped instill that “never quit” mentality into our DNA early and remained with us to see our success as we went from barely surviving to building a solid business to thriving as a company. Esther sadly passed away a few years ago, but her presence remains embedded into our work every single day.

As we grew, we expanded into a number of new areas. We went from a small utility-closet office to my condo to a full-fledged office building in that first decade. We also began to solidify our reputation as the premiere cleaning service in Dallas. Our team and business grew steadily and we were realizing our dream of making our customers’ homes feel like home again. It may sound silly but hearing from customers that they could come home, take off their shoes and just watch TV is such a gift. No dishes to wash. No laundry to fold. We handled that so you could enjoy the gift of a clean home.

Our reputation not only helped build a strong business, it sustained us in 2020. As we each isolated in our homes, as a company we faced real stress and anxiety. How do we clean a customer’s home safely? How do we survive the next month? How do we keep the lights on? In those dark days and weeks, you stepped in to help us. We had customers pay for cleanings that never happened just to keep us afloat. We had others tip generously because they knew our business slowed down and they wanted to make sure their team was taken care of. What a marvelous gift we received those days.

With your support and a PPP loan from the government, we made it through those turbulent months. We came out stronger for it and with the lesson further driven into our souls: care for other people and they will care for you.

Whether you have been with us since 2004 or you are one of our newest customers, we are so glad to have you alongside us on this journey. The author of The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis, once wrote

                                “There are far, far better things ahead,

                                  Than any we leave behind.”

I didn’t know it back then but that small phrase would be the Dallas Maids story. We would put long hours, hard work, and faith together on that journey and end up here 20 years later. As the owner, I look back on these past 20 years with a lot of nostalgia. We laughed. We cried. We worked early mornings. We worked late nights. We put one step in front of the other, every day, for 20 years.

I’m so glad you are on this journey with us. I can’t wait to see where the next 20 years takes us. I’m sure there will be good and bad days. That’s just the way life goes. But I am confident that we will approach these next 20 years with the same commitment to our work and each other. Those guiding principles have made the last 20 years remarkable and I’m sure they will make the next 20 years even better than I can imagine.

I want to share a moment with you to celebrate a Dallas Maids team member. Esther Kim was with us from the beginning. She brought life, ingenuity, grit, and laughter to our business during our first years. Esther succeeded in her role, both as an office manager, substitute cleaning aid, and overall teammate. She moved on to work elsewhere some time ago but her ethic, life, and creativity had seeped into our DNA.

I learned recently that Esther passed away after a battle with liver and kidney disease. I was heartbroken when I found out precisely because I was reaching out just to catch up and relive some of our shared memories. I’ve said all along that top talent makes us a premiere business. Esther was a part of that in the early days. More than just a co-worker, she was our friend. She worked early mornings and late nights to help us grow. She made us laugh. She sat with us in moments of anxiety. She innovated with us. She taught me to be a better boss.  She was nothing less than marvelous and I want to share a bit more of her story on our website so that she can live on with us in some small way.

Excellent from the Start

Esther was one of the first potential office managers I ever interviewed to work as the founding team of Dallas Maids. She interviewed well, sharing her experience and charm along the way. One story though, I thought was too good to be true.

Esther was an Olympic Taekwon-Do athlete. I remember rolling my eyes mentally when she shared the story. “Okay” I thought. “She’s nuts.” But after the interview I looked her up and was shocked to learn the truth.

In 2000, Esther found herself at the Olympic trials for women’s Taekwondo. Through a series of events, her teammate and opponent, Kay Poe, was injured before their final matchup. Esther could have easily won the match as Kay had dislocated her left kneecap in the prior match. Faced with a free pass to the Olympics, Esther forfeited the match.

Her hard work and determination had led her to the dream of her lifetime. Her opponent was ranked as the top female Taekwondo athlete in the world. Seeing the pain in Kay’s face as they prepared to face off, Esther decided to forfeit the match. She could have won easily as her opponent couldn’t stand up, much less fight.

Esther graciously conceded, allowing Kay Poe to win the forfeited match and take center stage at the Olympics in 2000. Four years later Esther would compete in the trials again but was unable to make the team.

When faced with a dream opportunity at the expense of a teammate, Esther responded with humility and excellence. She was excellent in her character first and foremost.

Esther’s character was rewarded when the U.S. Olympic committee recognized her integrity in 2000 and named her the U.S. Olympics female athlete of the year. While her dream didn’t pan out the way she might have hoped or expected, her commitment to being a good person of excellent character, was ultimately recognized.

Getting Started Takes Grit

If I had to sum up one of Esther’s greatest strengths, I would simply say she is “stubborn as an ox.” Esther knew how to buckle down and outwork the competition. That determination led her to the Olympics.

After hiring Esther to join our team, she brought the same fierce stubbornness to our business. I’ll never forget Esther recommending we advertise by delivering flyers to local homes and apartments early in the morning. In 2024 that sound ludicrous with the wide use and advanced state of the internet. But in 2004, it worked.

I liked the idea so we went for it. I didn’t like waking up at 3 or 4am to get started. We would work a few hours and then break for coffee as folks rushed out of their homes to work. Then we would get back in the car and keep going. Long story short, it worked. Our fledgling business began to grow steadily and we began to develop longstanding relationships with our customers.

As we continued to grow, we got our own office space. To call it that would be quite generous. It was more of a utility closet. But with Esther’s determination, we made it work. We had two small desks and two cubicle walls we put up to make a supply room for our cleaning materials. It wasn’t fancy. But it worked. It took grit, and Esther had plenty of that to bring to the table.

Speaking Her Mind

One of the advantages of owning and running a small business is the connection I’ve built with my team. Even 20 years later this work builds a trust and community I think is often lost at larger corporations or enterprises.

Another advantage of that close trust is the freedom to speak openly. Esther would happily offer her opinion on this situation or that, even if I didn’t ask for it.

But she had advice and insights I trusted. Can you say “I need your help with xx…” instead of “Can you do xx…,” she once insisted. Good managerial advice for a fledging boss still learning communication etiquette. Or her enthusiasm on passing out flyers daily. In Taekwondo you find the opponent’s weakest point and you hammer on it until they are beaten. So, we woke absurdly early every morning, hammering on and sure enough, we were able to provide Anna and Maria, our first cleaning team, a full schedule and a stable livelihood. We broke through barriers in certain areas and began to generate business. All because Esther spoke her mind from her experience.

She also spoke her mind about other issues that you wouldn’t dare discuss at a larger company. She weighed in on who I was dating, how the office was arranged, or any other host of topics that corporate America tends to stifle.

While it might not have always been appropriate, her open communication made us better and more often than not, made us laugh. Her blunt force honesty coupled with her humor and zeal was an incredible gift those early days.

Moving On

After those early years of hustling to stay afloat, Esther transitioned to a fully office-based position to support our business. We had managed to make it past the early days of wondering how we would pay the light bill. We were growing and even beginning to thrive, despite our missteps here and there.

During our first year, you could often find Esther on the phone with customers, encouraging our cleaning teams, or sharing a funny story. She worked well with others and built not just professional relationships, but meaningful ones. While I was always “the boss,” Esther maintained her open communication with me and near the end of her time with our company disclosed that she saw me more as a friend than her employer.

Esther eventually moved on from Dallas Maids under good terms. There was no fiery or scandalous exit. She had done her part and was moving on to another adventure in life with her family and career aspirations.

We kept in contact for a while. Though, as often happens, life took over for both of us and we fell out of touch. I was overwhelmed with grief when I tried to contact her and discovered she had passed away. While we hadn’t spoken in years, I felt the same way I had when she was at Dallas Maids. She was still a beloved, cherished, valued member of the team. She was still my friend, despite the time and distance.

Remembering Esther

I hope this short post will do Esther the honor she deserves. I hope it highlights her spirit which was so defined by ingenuity, determination, laughter, zeal, and life itself. I’ll never forget working long days and Esther insisting that we go grab drinks as a team afterward. She knew how to put in the work and celebrate it together.

Dallas Maids looks a lot different 20 years later. Our team is bigger. We have a respectable office space, great customers, and a quality team. We’ve grown, adapted, changed, evolved. We have done all those things because Esther gave us the opportunity to do them. She sacrificed. She worked long hours. She dreamed in those early days of what Dallas Maids could become. She helped lead us to where we are today. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

While Esther has passed on, her contributions to our team have become a part of our DNA. When we interview new candidates, we look for that same spark of greatness and excellence not just of work, but character. We laugh together. We speak our mind. We share ideas. We refuse to give up when something doesn’t work the first time. Those are the lessons Esther helped us learn. They are lessons that we live every day. In that way, we keep Esther with us and honor a life and teammate we love.

Alright, Greg thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

Thank you for this question as we are celebrating Dallas Maids’ 20th anniversary this year! The idea of starting a home cleaning service was initially meant for my girlfriend at the time and her friend. They were both uncertain about their future paths, so I suggested they start a maid service.

However, this wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment idea. It was an something I was confident would succeed. Anyway, here’s how the idea of starting a professional house cleaning service came to be:

1. Focus on Starting a Business
Over the past year, the desire to start my own business had been growing stronger. It was a thought deeply embedded in my subconscious, guiding my mind toward a clear goal.

2. Write Down All Your Ideas
One day, I decided to write down every business idea that came to mind. This wasn’t a one-time exercise. Over the next year, whenever an idea popped into my head—whether I was driving, having dinner, or even on the toilet—I’d jot it down immediately in a little note pad I carried with me constantly..

These spontaneous ideas are often the best because they come straight from the subconscious, which has been working behind the scenes to solve the problem you’ve given it.

3. To Find a Good Idea, Have Many Ideas
After a year, I had compiled a long list of business ideas. I reviewed them and picked a few that seemed promising. The idea of a maid service stood out because I had a compelling gut feeling it would succeed. It’s crucial to have this feeling because if you believe you won’t fail, you won’t.

As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” If the perfect idea doesn’t appear right away, set the list aside and revisit it later. Keep adding to it until the right idea surfaces.

4. Jump in 100%
When you find your idea, as I did, act on it immediately. Quit your job and dive in 100%. Holding onto your current job can be a crutch that’s too easy to fall back on. Taking the plunge forces you to sink or swim, and you’ll find swimming easier than you thought. You will not fail.

My ex-girlfriend deciding not to start the cleaning business became the catalyst for me to act. I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I knew it would succeed.

Succeeding With a Cleaning Business – This is how I succeeded with Dallas Maids. The method I used works because it leverages the power of your subconscious mind. By initially focusing on the problem (such as finding a business idea), you set a goal for your subconscious mind. As you go about your daily activities, your subconscious works on the details, and the solution will eventually “pop” into your mind.

Yes, I have bought a business. Over the years, I have considered acquiring 12 cleaning services and ultimately acquired two. The purpose of the acquisition was to leap frog the tough startup years for Emily’s Maids, my second maid service, by quickly acquiring customer accounts.

My approach involves analyzing the business, determining its value, and structuring the deal, usually focusing on asset purchases rather than stock purchases to mitigate liabilities. For example, I acquired customer accounts from “A Clean Sweep” and “Dial A Maid.” The acquisition process involves evaluating customer pricing, location, and the potential for integrating staff. Structuring deals based on customer retention is also crucial to minimize risks.

Certainly! During the pandemic, Dallas Maids faced a significant challenge when cancellations surged due to fear and uncertainty. Despite this, many customers continued to support the company by paying for services they had canceled or by offering generous tips to help the staff. This overwhelming support from customers showcased resilience and community spirit. We were blown away by their support!

Welcome/Opening

Hello everyone!

I can’t begin to express what it feels like to be with you today celebrating our company’s 20^th anniversary together! I’m so grateful to have each of you here today. I know our lives are busy. Between work, getting the kids to-and-from school, taking care of our families, our own chores and errands at home, and maybe the occasional night to ourselves or out and about in town, it’s hard to find time like this together. As we get started, I just want to say thank you for making space to celebrate this special moment together!

We spend our lives making events like this possible. Cleaning this and that for families so they can celebrate the special moments. And it’s no different for us. Today wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and creative energy that Monse brings along with the help of Nelly and Nely. They put a lot of work into this celebration and I’m so grateful for it. I think we all know that if I had planned this it wouldn’t be half as special or thoughtful and I wouldn’t have picked a venue and food as good as this. Thank you Monse, Nelly and Nely for pulling this together for us! It’s a treat for all of us and I’m grateful I can rely on you when I have big ideas to help make them a reality.

Home is where most of our lives happen. It’s where we rest after a hard day’s work. Where we see our kids take their first steps. It’s where we cook family meals. It’s where we put together costumes for Halloween or wrap Christmas presents to place under that tree we got that might be a little too big.

It’s also where we bring happiness to our customers. I once wrote a blog article on our website about an academic study that showed the connection between hiring a cleaning service and happiness. That connection exists because people want to come home and rest. That’s what we provide our customers. We give the working mother a peaceful, spotless haven to retreat to after a long day at work, we give the multi-generational family a clean dining room table to talk, share coffee, and play cards. We give the newlyweds a chance to laugh and giggle with each other in their pristine living room, avoiding the arguments many of us have experienced over who cleans what and when.

That’s what we have been doing together as a team. That’s our business. Making home a happy place ready for countless memories. And we’ve been doing it together for 20 years now!

Introduction

Twenty years ago this was all a vision and depending on who you asked, a pretty crazy dream. When I started Dallas Maids I had no idea the effort it would take from all of us to get to this moment.

Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter, once said “Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly. Having courage is accepting the wings one has.”

When I think back to our first few years in business, I think about all the courage it took to accept the wings we had. We believed in each other and our business. We had faith that Dallas Maids would take off one day. And because we had faith, we also showed up to work each day with a lot of courage. We believed that with each passing day and with each customer, another one would want to welcome us into their home. Faith and courage flew us in those early months and years.

The hours were long at first. So long in fact, my girlfriend at the time questions my fidelity to her! Why else would I be gone 12 hours a day? No one works that much? But we did.

And we didn’t have some meteoric rise. We weren’t an overnight success. It took years of steady, hard, determined work from all of us to get Dallas Maids off the ground. Our faith and courage drove us to get up early, work a full day, and even on the drive home or at home, think about ideas to help us take the next step. Those early days weren’t easy. They certainly were exciting! Exciting and exhausting. If you want proof of miracles, just look at me. I drank enough caffeine to stop a gorilla’s heart, yet somehow I’m here with you today.

But the gift of those early years is the gift that continues to guide us today: hard work pays off. We learned early on that hard work isn’t always glamorous. I remember coming home some days and passing out in bed or my couch only to wake up, take a quick shower, and do it all over again. And we did that for four years. Slowly, steadily, we built a reputation. We became known for working hard and delivering quality service. That became a part of our company’s DNA in those early days.

After those first four years of building a reputation in Dallas, we found ourselves flying high with a consistent customer base and growing interest in the community for our work. From that point, we’ve grown and grown, delighting customers with each visit, making their homes feel like home again, and taking care of each other on good days and bad. We found our wings.

Achievement and Milestones

Our first office was tiny. The property manager swore to me it was a legitimate office, but with no windows and a funny smell we could never quite figure out, I think it was really a closet. Even better, our first office was off of Harry Hines. At $250, monthly rent, it was affordable. I was relatively new to Dallas and wasn’t aware of the seedier businesses that part of town was known for. The fact we made it past 2004 alive and without a police raid or two is pretty phenomenal. Though we did occasionally receive calls asking for “extra services” we didn’t provide.

In 2005 we moved to our second office. I had learned a little bit more about the Dallas area and realized we couldn’t stay where we were. So we moved to a condo. It wasn’t conventional but it was bigger than our closet, closer to our customers, and even came with a washer and dryer. For the next 8 years we worked out of that condo. We made it work because we had faith. I think our start in Harry Hines and then that condo taught us to be creative. To look past the surface level. If we didn’t believe in what we were building, those two offices would have convinced us to close down.

Instead, we worked harder. We believed that greater things were coming because of our work. We learned to accept our current location along with its challenges but not to let them limit our work or our dreams.

In 2011 we decided to try something new. While Dallas Maids was succeeding, we did have potential customers that couldn’t afford our regular services. That’s when Emily’s Maids was born. On paper it sounded insane to start another business that competed with our own, but we focused on the same core values: quality team and hard work. Not only were we able to refer customers to Emily’s Maids when money constraints were an issue, we were able to start a new team with the same commitment to hard work, detail, and quality. When we did this, we opened new opportunities for so many of our team now here today and the synergy between the two companies is amazing!

In 2013 we moved out of that condo and into an office with nice curb appeal. And just one year later we became a million-dollar company. Since 2014 we have consistently grown and are one of the most recognized and award-winning cleaning service in town. We became those things by persevering. By laughing at silly mistakes like renting a closet as an office in a part of town we wouldn’t want to see our kids, by trusting each other, by getting up each morning believing that bigger and better things were just on the horizon. And they were!

Challenges and Resilience

I always knew our team was special. I trusted each of us to work hard, tell the truth, and go the extra mile. We pride ourselves in having a reliable, friendly, and fun team. That’s how we’ve done business for 20 years.

When Covid came in 2020, none of us were ready. I mean that. Our entire world was paralyzed in those early days of the pandemic. How could we carry on? How could we stay in business if it wasn’t safe to go into the homes of our customers? They definitely wanted our help because we all were spending so much more time at home. But the fear that defined those days made things like having a cleaning service come into their home more unlikely.

Covid came in 2020, sixteen years after we opened for business. I am confident that if we had run our business any other way, we would not have made it. So many smaller companies were not able to weather that storm. We did because of something so surprising. Many of our customers kept paying us, even though we weren’t going to their homes to clean as often or at all. They kept us going. Why? Because they remembered our work. They remembered how happy our team made them after long days at the office or out around town. And when things got tough for everyone, they refused to let us face it alone. They paid for cleanings that never happened, they tipped extremely well, they showed us how much we meant to them when things were so uncertain.

Between our generous customers and government grants, we were able to stay the course. We even gave back in those challenging days, offering free cleanings to nurses, paramedics, and others working in our crowded hospitals. As our customers helped us, we turned around to helped others the best way we knew – by working hard to make home feel like home again for our first responders to come home, unwind, and make their life a little less stressed.

Future Vision

As we’ve moved forward from those days, we’ve been able to make some solid changes to our business. Our recent rate increases have led to increased revenue, bigger paychecks, and no major complaints from our customers. Like me, they know the value of a quality team they can trust. Our plan is to gradually increase rates in the coming months for our repeat customers to make sure that you are receiving premiere pay for your premiere work.

A lot of businesses are raising prices and customers are leaving because their work isn’t quite worth it. Not so with our team. As our rates slowly increase and stabilize in the next year, I’m confident we won’t just keep our existing customers, but we’ll continue to grow.

Twenty years ago this was all a dream. A vision based on faith and hope that we could build a quality business that added value to our customers lives. It took a lot of courage, grit, creativity, and guts to get to this moment. I’m so glad we’ve made it this far.

Octavio Paz, the renowned Mexican poet, writer, and diplomat, once wrote, “The best is yet to come; there is always a new dawn.”

That can be hard to believe. Our history is so rich and full. It’s defined by courage, faith, teamwork, resilience, grit, laughter, kindness, and hard work. But I believe those words. What lies ahead is for us to dream about and experience a new, wonderful dawn together.

At twenty years old we are at an interesting point in our journey. Our business is stable and growing. Our team is diverse with both new members and veterans adding value each day. Today as we celebrate, I invite each of you to dream with me. What could the next 20 years look like at Dallas Maids? What’s the next step we can take? Do you have an exciting idea that would make our company better? An added service we could consider?

I want the coming weeks and year to be defined by these exciting dreams. We are living proof that hard work and commitment can bring dreams to life. Spring is just around the corner! This is such an exciting time of the year, especially in Dallas, TX. After a harsh winter, Spring always brings hot, sunny days to go out and enjoy Dallas.

Always Start Spring Cleaning With Decluttering

If you haven’t decluttered in a while, this is a great time.

First, completely empty your food storage area. Take a look at your items, and get rid of the expired stuff. Take of whatever’s expiring soon (in the next six months) and make sure to put it on the front to remember you need to use these items soon.

You can do the same for personal care items in your bathroom or makeup or makeup vanity.

In your living room, you might need to take down some décor and swap it with spring-themed items. This can go anywhere from frames and flower vases, to throw pillows and cushions.

You’re now transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring and you may have old clothes. You also have drawers filled with random items that you don’t really use that often. and even a storage room or a garage that needs some organizing.

Wipe down your shelves with just a tiny spritz of water, a drop of dish soap, and white vinegar.

Organize Your Storage Areas

First things first in our spring cleaning guide: organize your storage areas. Storage areas are filled with dust and grime over time, especially in your kitchen and your bathroom. Besides, clutter creates visual noise and makes your home feel messy and dirty, even if it’s not.

A bit of decluttering and organizing is always helpful, at least once a quarter. We’re getting close to the end of March so this makes it the perfect opportunity to organize your pantry, your cleaning closet, your bathroom vanity and your bedroom closet.

Pro tip: put identical boxes with labels saying what goes inside. This way, everyone in your family knows the right location for your items and it helps you keep consistency.

Depending on your preferred strategy, you might want to clean first and then organize your items.

After Organizing, It’s Spring Cleaning Time!

Now that you’ve decluttered and organized your items. Gather all your cleaning products and start with your cleaning!

Pro tip: make sure you make a list of tasks for deep cleaning for areas where you normally don’t clean. Baseboards, bookshelves, ceiling fans, door frames.

Make sure you have a cleaning caddy ready with your cleaning products and supplies: microfiber cloths, floor cleaning tools (a broom, a mop, a bucket, and a vacuum cleaner).

Once your surfaces are clear, give them a good wipe-down. In this case, you can use a commercial multi-purpose cleaner to make everything sparkle. Eco-friendly cleaners are safe for most surfaces and decently effective against low-to-mid grime and dirt buildup.

Remember to start from the top. Wipe your open shelves, bookshelves, and upper kitchen cabinets. Then, your countertops, your dining table, TV stand, desks, side tables, and your bed.

Remember to Deep Clean Your Floors

Vacuuming is important for carpet floors. Do this on a zig-zag: walk to the opposite corner of the door of whatever room you’re in. Then, move forward with your vacuum cleaner, and then move backwards, but this time slide yourself to the right (or left) until you move half the width of your vacuum cleaner. Then, move forward again and repeat the process until you reach the door.

This way, you will vacuum the entire area twice and your floors will be nice and clean. Make sure you get into the corners and under the furniture as well.

If you haven’t deep cleaned your carpet floors (for 18 months or longer) consider hiring a professional cleaning service or renting an industrial carpet cleaner.

If you have tile floors, fill a bucket with warm, soapy water and use a rough brush to scrub everything away. Always follow the direction of the tile. If possible, use a steam cleaner to clean the grout as well and disinfect the area.

The Final Touch: A Spritz of Fragrance

With every year, our house cleaning tips change and it’s just not about actual cleaning anymore. Cleaning is also about having a tidy, pleasant space. For this Spring cleaning, let’s incorporate a nice fragrance into our homes!

Let’s improve air quality first. Opening windows is the best way to improve air circulation, but nowadays temperature is still extremely cold in many cities, such as Dallas and the rest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

If you can’t open windows right now, you can invest in an air purifier or a dehumidifier. Moisture often creates an unpleasant odor, especially around small, closed spaces like bathrooms and laundry areas. If this is the case in your home, you can get a dehumidifier to help balance out the excessive moisture.

An air purifier, on the other hand, absorbs the microbes and microscopic lint in the air. With fewer bacteria floating around, the smell in your home will improve as well.
