We’re right in the middle of January! We hope you got to spend the past weeks enjoying the new year and by now, we’re all back to work.

We thought it was a good idea to start the year off with house cleaning tools and techniques to help you improve your cleaning skills!

Simplify Your House Cleaning Process

Look for strategies that simplify your house cleaning process. Writing down and planning out what you need to clean is a good example.

Many people choose Sundays to figure out what they need to do during the week and write everything down in their planner.

If you want to be more organized, keep a list with 2 – 3 cleaning tasks that you need to accomplish each week, and then 3 more tasks that you need to complete once a month.

We have many different cleaning checklists to help you sort out some of these tasks.

Check our January Checklist from last year, or our extensive Spring Cleaning Checklist if you need a deeper, more extensive cleaning routine.

Get a Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

One of the tools you can incorporate into your cleaning caddy is a handheld vacuum cleaner. They are going to help you work on areas where a regular vacuum cleaner wouldn’t be ideal, such as:

a) Hard-to-reach areas such as cupboards and light fixtures;

b) Nooks and crannies inside your couch and armchairs;

c) Your car and your workspace, either at home or at your office!

A handheld vacuum cleaner has a small dirt container. The cheaper alternatives are simple, cordless vacuums. The more premium options are full-sized vacuum cleaners with floor heads that you can turn into a handheld vacuum.

Clean from Top to Bottom

This is a basic tip but most cleaning rookies don’t know this. Always clean from top to bottom!

When it’s time for some house cleaning, you don’t know where to start sometimes. This is a great rule of thumb.

By cleaning from top to bottom, all the dirt and crumbs will fall naturally to the next surface, and the next one until they reach the floor.

This means leaving your floors for last, of course.

Use Steam for House Cleaning

You have two options here: a steam cleaner or a steam mop. A steam cleaner comes with different attachments and nozzles to help you clean your kitchen splashback and faucets, and your upholstery.

Steam mops, on the other hand, are perfect to clean and sanitize hard floors without needing chemicals. If you have hardwood floors, this might be a fantastic tool.

You avoid using strong chemicals, you lift dirt and you kill bacteria, all using only water!

Pre-treat Areas With Water and Soap

Pre-treating areas is less common than you think! Many people apply their cleaning agents and just jump right into scrubbing and wiping.

However, most areas and items can be pre-treated with soapy water (or similar cleaning products) for 15 – 30 minutes. This goes from bathroom fixtures to pots and pans in your kitchen.

How can you speed up your cleaning process? Pre-treat the most challenging areas, and work on other areas while you wait.

You can pre-treat your toilet and your shower and in the meantime, scrub and wipe your sink and your mirror, for example.

I’m excited to announce that Monse has accepted a promotion at Dallas Maids as our General Manager. Truthfully, it is not so much a promotion, rather it is recognition for what she has already been doing for a long while at Dallas Maids.

Monse basically promoted herself by taking on additional responsibilities and doing what was necessary to ensure Dallas Maids continued to operate at a high level, serving our customers and staff.

Monse has been us for over 2 years. She has earned this position, but not overnight. She has taken a step every day to prove herself as a trustworthy, kind, empathetic, and hard-working team mate and leader.

Monse’s journey has led her to be here, as our new general manager. But it started some 2 and half years ago.

Monse joined Dallas Maids in 2020. She was an office manager that had a particular zest for getting the job done while also helping customers feel seen, respected, and important. But before I knew that, I remember interviewing Monse with our team and thinking she would be perfect for the job.

She had naturally risen in rank at her previous places of employment, to hold key positions of management. And from her interview, I could clearly see why; she was exceptionally professional, well-spoken, genuine, a natural leader. I just got a good gut feeling about Monse.

She was hired.

Monse’s Performance

I’m so glad I waited to see her character. I’m so glad I listened to my gut and that she has called us her team because she would soon prove how invaluable she was to Dallas Maids.

She hit the floor running. (Monse, thank you for reading the Operation Manual before accepting our offer!) For a brief time Monse moved to Emily’s Maids. Her experience, charm, and desire to provide a quality service helped Emily’s Maids grow.

Once an opening appeared, I gave Monse and option of returning to Dallas Maids. I was thrilled she came back. She has been an excellent team leader. She makes sure work gets done. Monse has even helped with our recruiting efforts, introducing us to Nelly (Emily’s Maids) and Edith (Dallas Maids).

More About Monse, the new Dallas Maids General Manager

As you all know from working with Monse, she loves to laugh and connect while also working hard together. That vigor and passion has been critical to our success as the Dallas area’s most highly rated and awarded cleaning service in Dallas.

It is that tenacity, that spark, that has brought Monse to this new path on her journey.

Today, we take a minute to honor Monse. Her work, her smile, her compassion. And we also take a minute to learn from her. She has walked a journey of a thousand miles at Dallas Maids to become our new manager. But that journey wasn’t clear or obvious the first day. It all started when she woke up her first day and made the choice to work hard, stay the course, and do her best.

That is what we are celebrating today. Not just the work she has done, but who she is. Monse, we are proud of you and so excited to be on your team in the next leg of our journey together.

The holidays are upon us and I was wondering if I could start our annual Christmas letter this year with some data points? Festive, I know.

In 2021 more than 67% of Americans supported raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15.00 per hour. In fact, that number has stayed above 60% for more than 5 years and only keeps increasing. Despite the country’s broad support legislation has either stalled or died in the halls of Congress under both political parties.

Meanwhile, billion-dollar corporations have capitalized on the pain and anxiety of a global pandemic. They have made over $1.3 trillion more than they had prior to the advent of the COVID-19 era. Billionaires have brandished their insane dreams of touching the stars. Meanwhile, our neighbors and friends wonder if they can continue to pay their mortgage, buy Christmas presents, or choose between a much-needed new pair of shoes or a long-overdue oil change.

As our nation shudders beneath all this economic turmoil and hardship, a personal story from just this week caused me to reflect and find hope.

What Dignity Means to Delfina

Our longest-tenured employee, Delfina opened up about her time with Dallas Maids with me earlier this week. Delfina has 15 years with our company, joining the team when we were only in our third year.

She has seen our highs and lows and provided consistent, quality service through it all. Yesterday she shared with me that because of Dallas Maids’ industry bucking pay standards, she was able to put both her daughters through college. She was so pleased to share that her choices were not between groceries or an electric bill, but between which Christmas presents to buy to spoil her children.

Delfina’s story isn’t the only one like it in our company. This year she is receiving her 15-year service award – a gold ring. We also have two staff members receiving their 10-year service award this month as well – a silver ring.

This is employee consistency in an industry that averages 300% turnover rate in a single year. Much of this consistency comes from the stellar leadership of Lupe and Monse. They manage the daily operations of Dallas Maids and their work has fostered an extended family atmosphere. Our team is able to divide the sadness amongst ourselves on the hardest days. This way, no one carries a burden alone and multiply joy in the brightest moments to celebrate things like children graduating college.

All of this is possible because you, as our customers, care about people. Dallas Maids is not the cheapest cleaning service in town. I know that – you know that. Google reviews certainly knows that! But for paying a slightly higher price our customers know that the service will be 5-star. And, more importantly, that not only will the cleaning artist cleaning their home be treated with dignity and respect. They will be the same person cleaning your home for years, having a chance to grow with the family.

The living wage in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is $15.21 for a single individual and $20.43 for a couple with two children. Our employees surpass that minimum standard of pay. And that is because of a robust company culture and a customer base that values not only quality but also dignity.

I have no political pull. I can’t meander through the halls of power in this country and actuate change that will lift so many out of poverty. But, I do own a business. And I can use that business to serve customers and empower employees to work hard while earning a respectable wage that doesn’t just enable survival, but thriving.

As Christmas approaches, I wanted to share this simple moment of joy with you. Your patronage at Dallas Maids has meaning and it provides real dignity. It sends children to college, buys Christmas presents without anxiety, and puts smiles on dozens of my teams’ faces each day. That is certainly a reason to celebrate this holiday season.

Being a resident of the Lakewood area, my family regularly receives the Advocate Magazine. They pride themselves as a hyper-local targeted magazine bringing neighborhood news to residents.

Recently they reported on Dallas Maids first responders relief fund.

I’m thrilled my company’s free cleans for first responders is getting local recognition from well-regarded publications such as The Advocate and D Magazine.

At Dallas Maids, we strongly believe in helping each other and our community. We have collaborated with different charities, like Cleaning for a Reason. We have donated to different funds and supported our people as much as possible.

And now we came up with our relief fund for first responders. House cleaning has shown many benefits both in the physical sense and the mental health sense.

People with clean homes are less likely to get sick from bacteria or mold. They are also well-rested and feel calmer when their home is clean and tidy.

And first responders are under huge stress right now. They are overworked, underpaid and with a lot of pressure. The last thing they want to do once they get home is tidying and cleaning their house.

We want to give back to our community and, in return, we all win. First responders with a clean home will be able to rest properly, decreasing any chances of them getting sick at home.

A Little Forest Hills neighbor is offering free house cleaning services for first responders through his business, Dallas Maids.

Owner Greg Shepard started the relief service as a way to keep his staff employed during the pandemic. Although many customers canceled their services, they continued paying, and Shepard parlayed those funds into free cleanings for first responders.

“It touched all of our hearts,” Shepard said. “The worst times bring out the best in people.”

Cleanings will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until donations run out. Customers must show a work ID to schedule their cleaning.

So far, the company has completed 13 cleanings for first responders.

“We got a review today from a first responder, and she expressed how much this has helped her,” Shepard said. “She was in New York for eight weeks helping. When you come home to a clean house, it’s a good feeling.”

As Dallas begins to reopen, Shepard said he still needs help. Neighbors can help support a local business and donate a cleaning on GoFundMe.

“We’re nowhere near where we were going into this, but we’re 60 or 65 percent of where we were,” Shepard said. “I’m glad. I know a lot of people have been hit harder. Even if you’re an essential business, it can really hurt.”

Greg, What Is Your Background, Education and Work Experience?

Native-born of Chicago but grew up mostly in the south. However, I studied Information Systems and Marketing at Baylor University. Information Systems because in the mid-90’s it was apparent being computer savvy would be a necessary asset as personal computers and the internet quickly became staples in our lives. Marketing because I simply loved it. And I was fortunate to have studied both at an amazing university such as Baylor. They both proved integral to my professional success.

After graduating in 1998, I landed my first job at IBM. I considered myself incredibly lucky to have a chance to work at Big Blue. I worked technical support but it was not just a normal technical support job. My job was working on IBM’s supercomputers which were, at the time, the fastest computers in the world. We got calls from places such as the White House (they had the computer in their basement) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (they ran nuclear simulations on it).

One night I got a call from the State of Ohio where I spent the entire night making sure the computer was functioning in the morning before they started normal business hours. Knowing the entire state is relying on you to make sure they can operate the next day was exhilarating yet quite stressful. You may have heard of Deep Blue. It was the first computer defeat of reigning World Chess Champion and legend Garry Kasparov. Yeah, that was a cool first job for a college student.

After Big Blue I started working at Bank of America. This is where I was responsible for computer systems that supported the Bank’s Trusts’ systems. Though sitting in front of a blue screen day in and out was wearing on me. Sure, the money was good but there is more in life than a fat paycheck. This is what led me to leave the high-tech world and start my house cleaning company. Today it is one of the largest, most recognizable names in home cleaning in Dallas!

What Caused You to Start This Business?

Well, I really wanted to build a business. I wanted to create something that would provide value to other people. The goal was to see the big picture, not just hack away at code in front of a computer. 

I got tons of ideas from the books that I began to read, and I wrote all of them in a pocketbook that I kept on me. Over time, this list of ideas grew and became something special. After analyzing my maid service idea, I decided that it was the best one and that I could not fail.

I then created a basic website, quit my job, and hired two maids and an office manager. I started off pretty frugal and rented a small office space to begin building my business.

How Do You See Your Business Growing In The Following Years?

Dallas Maids will be around for years to come. We are continually refining our systems to stay ahead of the competition and provide the best house cleaning in Dallas, period. Within 5 years I plan to splinter off Dallas Maids and form a new maid service in Frisco.

We are beyond elated to have partnered with #cleaning4areason and to be able to provide free cleanings to warriors.

If you haven’t heard about it before, Cleaning for a Reason is an amazing initiative. It provides free home cleaning services to patients battling cancer. Cleaning for a Reason has been helping cancer patients since 2006.

They have partnered with many cleaning companies for help, including Dallas Maids. We’ve been part of this initiative since 2014.

We’re grateful and honored to give back to our community in the Dallas area. Especially for patients going through such difficult times for the past 5 years, and hopefully for many more years to come!

Thank you for giving us this chance to help you with this article. We have a wonderful history with D Home Magazine and I’m glad to help out!

The Ultimate Homeowner’s Cleaning Checklist should be no more than 12 items! No need to buy different specialty cleaners such as carpet stain remover if the job can be done by other cleaners. Dallas Maids cleaning teams have a select few cleaners and tools that can do a wide variety of jobs because it makes for a more efficient and effective clean. Also, for any homeowner, it is much easier to clean if you can keep all your supplies in one area and don’t need to carry a plethora of supplies for various tasks, too.

The Dallas Maids Homeowners’ Checklist for Cleaning

1) All Purpose – A good all purpose cleaner is the staple to anyone’s cleaning arsenal. It will able to clean sinks, counter tops, surfaces, vents, and other cleaning tasks that you did not think of using it for such as removing carpet stains.
For an organic and effective all purpose cleaning, use vinegar! Combine one part vinegar and one part water for an All Purpose cleaner that goes toe to toe with any off the shelf you’d buy at the store.
2) De-greaser – Some jobs are just too tough for an all purpose. For example cleaning out caked on oven gook requires a degreaser. Apply and let it soak in for a while.
3) Windex – great for windows and shining chrome such as sink faucets.
4) Pledge – A must (and the best) for wooden furniture.
5) Medical/Surgical rags – These are usually blue colored and used, as the name suggest, in hospitals. It is also the perfect cleaning rag! Keeping with the less is more, These rags can be used for wiping surfaces and windexing windows. Google “medical towels” to find sellers. 6) Mop & bucket or Swiffer
7) Broom & dust pan – Brooms aren’t only perfect for cleaning floors. Use them to remove cobwebs from the ceiling corners, chandeliers, and quickly wipe down baseboards.
8) Feather duster – These are tried and true dust destroyers. Of course there are microfiber dusters that are outstanding!… at first. They wear out quickly as dust accumulates (even after washing them!).
9) Step Stool – needed for wiping down those higher up areas such as tops of refrigerators, ceiling fans, bookshelves, etc.
10) Vacuum – make sure you have one with built in extensions so you can get to all the nook and crannies along with vacuuming non-floor items such as curtains, clothe furniture, etc.
11) Latex gloves – A necessity not only for hygiene, but also to protect you from the more powerful cleaners such as the de-greaser.

Optional Tools and Additional Info

The next two are optional – not everyone have wood floors and stainless appliances
12) Wood floor cleaner – Dallas Maids uses Polycare because it is one of the best floor cleaners we’ve used and it’s organic! Murphy’s Oil is also good and more easily available.
13) Stainless Steel Cleaner – Weiman has proven to be the best of all Dallas Maids has experimented with.

Ten years ago Dallas Maids were invited to star on Prime Time Love, a reality TV show following the lives of the Sanders family. In episode 2 Pilar, Deion Sander’s wife, felt her family underappreciated her domestic services. So what did she do? Hire folks to do her chores for her then handing the bill to her hubby. Ouch!

One of her chores, housecleaning, was outsources to Dallas Maids. Yay!

We initially received a call from one of the show’s representatives setting up the time and place. Said it would take the whole day. Made sense, it was a 29,000 sq ft mansion! Yet in face of this daunting cleaning challenge,  our two cleaning artists were excited to have their 15 minutes of fame. Though they had nothing to worry about. It ended up being easy housecleaning.

Our Reality TV Filming Day

Upon arrival, our cleaning crew were ushered into a quiet room where they waited.

Waited.

And waited.

After a few hours they were taken to one of the Living Rooms. Vacuum and dusters in hand, the TV crew positioned them just so. There they cleaned the same spot over and over again. Once the camera men was satisfied with the shots, they placed the cleaning crew in another area for more filming. This went on for a couple of hours until the cameramen had enough material. Which leads to the next point…

Reality TV is 100% scripted.

Anyway, that was it. Easy housecleaning.
