5 Simple Ways to Tidy a Tiny Home or Apartment

Do you live in a small apartment? Maybe a typical one-bedroom, one-bathroom place with a kitchen roughly the size of a generous closet? If so, you already know the problem: small spaces get messy fast. In a larger home, one random piece of paper on a table is just a piece of paper. In a tiny apartment, it somehow becomes the visual centerpiece of your entire living space.

A few dishes in the sink, some laundry on a chair, one Amazon box by the door, and suddenly your apartment looks like you’ve given up on civilization. Fortunately, keeping a small home clean and organized doesn’t require becoming an obsessive neat freak. A few simple habits can make a surprisingly big difference.

Keep the Decorating Simple

Small spaces and clutter are natural enemies, so try not to fill every available surface with decorations. We all love bringing home souvenirs from trips, but before buying that Buddha statue, decorative plate, miniature Eiffel Tower, and sombrero, ask yourself one important question: Where exactly is this going to live?

Otherwise, six months later, you may have an international summit taking place on top of your dresser. Fridge magnets, photos, and other small keepsakes are great alternatives because they let you remember your travels without sacrificing half your apartment to souvenir diplomacy.

Put a Small Trash Bin Where You Actually Need It

Having a small trash bin in several areas of your home can prevent little bits of clutter from slowly taking over. Receipts, wrappers, empty containers, junk mail, and other tiny pieces of everyday life have an amazing ability to migrate onto countertops and tables. Give them somewhere convenient to go. And while we’re here: perhaps reconsider collecting wine corks in a giant glass jar. Yes, it looks charming at first. Eventually, though, it starts looking less like décor and more like evidence.

Shelves Are Your Best Friends

When floor space is limited, look up. Shelves let you use vertical space that would otherwise go completely to waste. A small kitchen shelf can organize dishes, spices, or cooking supplies. Shelves in the living room can hold electronics, books, and decorative items. Bathroom shelves can keep toiletries organized instead of forming a mysterious collection around the sink. The basic rule is simple: If you can’t spread out, stack up.

Beware of the Chair That Becomes a Closet

You know the chair. Every home has one. It starts innocently enough with a jacket tossed over the back. Then a sweater joins it. Then some jeans. Then another jacket. Within a week, the chair has disappeared beneath a small textile mountain. Eventually, you’ll be searching the apartment thinking, Whatever happened to my black hoodie? It knows exactly where it is. Try to make a habit of putting clothes directly into the closet, dresser, hamper, or wherever they belong. In a small home, furniture needs to remain furniture.

Let Technology Save You Some Space

One nice thing about modern technology is that a lot of things that used to occupy half a room have become remarkably small. Televisions are thin. Speakers are compact. Laptops replace desktop computers. Phones have replaced cameras, alarm clocks, calculators, calendars, maps, and about 37 other things we used to keep around the house. Whenever possible, choose compact or multipurpose products. The fewer physical objects you need, the easier a small home is to keep organized.

A Little Routine Goes a Long Way

Finally, small homes benefit tremendously from doing a few tiny things every day. Wash the dishes before they become a geological formation. Put clothes away when you take them off. Throw out junk mail immediately. Spend five minutes putting things back where they belong before going to bed. Because in a small apartment, clutter accumulates quickly, but the good news is that cleaning it up can be quick too.
